Obama set to send 1200 troops to Mexican border

PHOENIX - Barack Obama the president's plan to send more than 1,200 National Guard troops to the US-Mexico border appears to be a smaller version at the bottom of the approach advocated by the border security of its predecessor.

The 6,000 soldiers who were sent by President George W. Bush at the border in June 2006 to July 2008 were credited within police circles as having contributed to improving border security, but the restrictions imposed on the soldiers have been denounced by advocates for tougher enforcement that are now surfacing similar objections to the Obama plan.

Some law enforcement officials along the border have expressed concern that Obama is going to repeat the mistake of Bush in limiting troops to support roles, such as surveillance and the installation of lighting, rather than allowing them to proceed arrests and to combat smuggling. They also believe that the magnitude of the force - one fifth the size of the one sent by Bush - is too small to make a difference in the length of the border-mile 2,000.
