Tom Ross: Why's that fish hook in my finger?

- I sometimes wonder what I'd do if I had the misfortune to bury a hook in my flesh.

Now, I know.

I have been fly fishing for trout in Colorado for three decades now, and it seems that I constantly improving as a fisherman about 15 years ago. I have great days when I catch a fish half-dozen, and I am when I do not catch anything. But Saturday, I managed to do something that I have not done in 30 years in angle brackets waving in the air over my head.

I managed to bury the hook of a fly - a hare's ear veins of gold - in the flesh at the tip of my right little finger. Not only do I not know now what I'd do on a hook in my finger, I know that its removal need not be as painful as you might imagine.

We were fishing in difficult winds at North Delaney Butte Lake in the north of the park, about 13 miles from Walden. I was jazzed because in his first 10 shots that day, my friend Jim had hung, fillet of trout and released a beautiful brown with a pronounced kype - a jaw hanging.
