I about the lathe`s spindle is horizontal and the milling machine`s spindle is vertical. Don`t bet on my answer being customary though.

Canyon Hydro Constructs New CNC Fabrication Center

Canyon Hydro, hydroelectric Canyon Industries Division, built a new manufacturing center for the manufacture of CNC hydraulic systems. The manufacturing facility is located in Washington, a few miles from the manufacturing plant in Deming Elementary Canyon Hydro.

Canyon Hydro completed a major expansion of its manufacturing facility, including a 7-axis CNC milling machine capable of maintaining tight tolerances on hydroelectric turbines society. The company said that a 7-axis CNC milling machine is capable of producing Pelton and Francis hydro turbines up to 16 feet in diameter.

Canyon Pelton runners are generally milled from a single casting of stainless steel. The company also rebuilds existing turbine systems for hydroelectric projects. The 7-axis CNC machine accommodates components up to 36 feet long, 16 feet in diameter and 25 tons.
